“It was a real eye opener, a reality check if you like” said Boomers Captain Glaubitz ‘It was great to think we could go to the house and at the very minimum give the kids and the family a chance to not think about the tough times they are going thru right now”
“6 Children and teens ranging from the age of 3-15 took part in the basketball clinic. The patients ranged from one young boy who the very next day was going in for open heart surgery to another young girl who had just recently been diagnosed with cancer in her leg. There was one young boy who participated, only 3 years old and I thought he must have a brother in the house because he was so full of energy but in fact he was the patient, so young to be fighting Leukaemia. His parent were so brave it was inspiring and this little boy was just a gem, with his fighting spirit he is giving the Leukaemia a good run for its money”
The clinic was led by Michele Timms with Melbourne Tigers players Sam McKinnon and Luke Kendall joining in all the fun. On a hot afternoon the team played games with the kids and family members and finished with a bbq.
Young Boomer Liz Cambage was a hit with all the kids, some of them competed very well against her in the ball skills departmentJ
“It is always great to take the game to the community” said Assistant Coach Michele Timms “but todays clinic was one of the most memorable ones I have done in years. It isn’t always easy going into this sort of environment as you aren’t quite sure what to say but the kids were all so open and friendly and happy to share their journey with us. Being a parent with a little girl it was a really good reality check. Sometimes you get so wound up with the game you can lose sight of what’s important and how fortunate you are. Spending time at Ronald McDonalds House was a wonderful couple of hours that made me feel I walked away a better person and one that is more appreciative of the little things.”
The Global Metals Boomers team are great supporters of McDonalds and wish to thank McDonalds and Basketball Victoria for the opportunity to spend time at Ronald McDonald House.
With Mc Happy Day just around the corner you can catch some of the Boomers players at McDonalds Eltham.
