The Townsville Fire appear set to have an all-American front court for the upcoming WNBL season after signing US college graduate and WNBA draftee Kayla Standish.

In a coup for the ever-improving Fire, Standish joins the team after completing four seasons with Gonzaga University before being taken by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2012 WNBA Draft.

The 188cm Washington native’s addition to the Fire roster for the 2012/13 WNBL season has the potential to create one of the most feared front courts in the competition.

Joining Standish is the returning Shanavia Dowdell, who enjoyed a memorable debut WNBL season for the North Queensland club.

Dowdell was handed a WNBL All Star Five accolade for a first season that saw her average more than 15 points (per game) and 9 rebounds, shooting at 52.8 per cent from the field.

A star for Gonzaga over the past two seasons, Standish led the Bulldogs to consecutive deep runs in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament on the back of averaging 16.8 points (per game) and 8 rebounds in the period.

Leading her team to the Sweet 16 in the 2012 NCAA Tournament on the back of averaging 22.3 points per game, Standish quickly popped up on the WNBA Draft radar and was snapped up by the Lynx with the seventh pick of the second round.

Standish joins Jayco Opals and Bulleen Boomers young gun Rachel Jarry on the Lynx’s books.
