NEW BDS Logan Thunder signing Laurie Koehn has arrived at her new club.

NEW BDS Logan Thunder signing Laurie Koehn has landed on Australian shores (Wednesday October 17) after fulfilling her commitments with WNBA side Atlanta Dream.

The American import touched down at Brisbane International Airport earlier this morning where she was met by club officials.

The Dream bowed out of the 2012 WNBA playoffs after falling to the Indiana Fever two weeks ago, however media and contractual requirements delayed the 30-year-old guard’s arrival at the club.

BDS Logan Thunder head coach Jason Chainey welcomed the news but was cautious of the challenges that surround bringing in new recruits after missing the start of the season.

“At any time you bring in a player there is always that little bit of disruption so we need to ensure that I work with our senior players and our leadership group to make sure that she fits in well and we continue to get better,” Chainey said.

“We need to be careful that it doesn’t throw any spanners in the works.”

Despite having a relatively quiet season for the Dream, where she played 23 games and averaged 1.8 points, Chainey said he was confident the three-point specialist would adapt quickly to her new club and be back to her devastating best for the Thunder.

“Laurie has five years experience in the WNBA under her belt and is a seasoned player, which I’m sure will help ease the transition,” Chainey said of the strike weapon, who previously ranked first in the WNBA in three-point field goals.

“We are all thrilled to have someone of Laurie’s calibre joining the club and I’m sure she will fit in well with the playing group and the Logan Thunder program.”

Koehn is expected to train with her new team mates on Thursday but will not suit up for Friday’s home fixture against Adelaide Lightening (7.30pm) as the club waits for Koehn’s visa clearance and allows her time to settle in to her new home.

“I must admit after the way our guards have been playing in the first two weeks she is going to have to work pretty hard to earn her spot as well,” Chainey said.

“I am very proud of our group for the way they have all stepped up over the past few weeks and are challenging each other to earn court time.”

Media are invited to attend a media opportunity with Koehn at the Thunder’s training session on Thursday morning at Logan Metro from 8.00am.
