McInerny named MVP, Rangers announce team of the decade

In front of more than 180 people AFL legend Jason Dunstall announced defensive dynamo Emily McInerny as the Rangers Most Valuable Player for the ADF WNBL Season 2007/08.

McInerny who has been with the Rangers since 2000 has enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the Jayco Rangers and in the WNBL, winning the League Defensive Player of the Year award a record nine times and was a part of the gold medal Opals team for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games and 2006 World Championship in Brazil. 

“I am delighted and very surprised to have won this award,” McInerny said.

“I know I have done a lot in my basketball career, but at 29 years of age it is a great honor to have won this award.”

Past winners of the Rangers’ MVP include fellow world champion Penny Taylor and club legends Lucille Bailie, Allie Douglas and Jacinta Hamilton.

The Rangers were also celebrating their ten year partnership with Naming Right sponsor Jayco and named the ‘Jayco Team of the Decade.’

Coach of the Jayco Rangers Team of the Decade is two time Championship coach – Gary Fox.

The players who could not be present on the night (Penny Taylor playing in Russia, Jacinta Hamilton living in Germany who Socceroo husband Josh Kennedy and Lucille Bailie living in Canberra) sent video messages of thanks and best wishes.

At the end of the evening Jayco Company secretary Eddie Wood was presented with an oil painting collage of the Jayco Rangers Team of the Decade by Dandenong Basketball Association President Charles Ryan.
