New Lynx coach announced

19.02.10

Basketball WA today announced the appointment of David Herbert as the new Go for 2 & 5 Perth Lynx, Head Coach for a two year term.

Former Townsville Fire Head Coach and current Basketball WA High Performance Coach, Herbert beat a strong list of International and National candidates for the job. A former WNBL coach of the year, Herbert brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position.

Basketball WA CEO Rick Smith said “David is a great fit for the Go for 2 & 5 Perth Lynx program. He has the necessary experience, passion and drive to propel this program forward in the direction it needs to go.  He impressed the selection panel with a clear vision for the program and the strategies he would implement to get it there. David will be working tirelessly in the next six months to lay the foundation for a successful 2010/11 season”.

Herbert was the inaugural Head Coach of the Townsville Fire, spending six seasons with this program after a two season stint as the Assistant Coach with the Dandenong Rangers.

Herbert said he was delighted with the appointment and that he was looking forward to the challenge of building a program that would earn the respect of the other WNBL teams and engage the WA community as a whole.

“I learnt a great deal during my time at Townsville and know what is required to make this program a success.  It will involve a lot of hard work from a group of dedicated people. The program needs to engage the basketball community and make them feel part of it” said Herbert.

“If we want to develop a first class program, we need to show a willingness to co-operate and as a State move this program forward.  I am very excited about the challenge that lies ahead and will be putting many things in place to ensure future success” added Herbert.

Herbert will continue in his current role as the High Performance Coach for Basketball WA and believes the dual role will work well in ensuring an integrated pathway for women’s basketball in Western Australia.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: The Perth Lynx have a new coach, and for fans of LMSC he’s a familiar face and voice.

After a season of upheaval that saw former coach Joe McKay resign mid tournament and a raft of on courts failures, the Lynx program is moving in new direction with the appointment of a former WNBL coach of the Year.

Dave Herbert, the man whose dulcet tones have entertained basketball fans during LMSCtv.com’s live broadcast of Lynx and Perth Wildcats games in season 2009/10, is the new coach of the Perth WNBL franchise.

A former coach of the Townsville Fire, Herbert takes on what most would declare the toughest gig in the WNBL.

“Really it’s a matter of changing an building a culture so looking at the whole program and trying to develop it and make it attractive for players to want to come here,” Herbert told LMSC.com.au on Thursday.
