The Canberra TransACT Capitals recorded their highest winning margin of the season to trounce the AIS 115-39 in a Canberra derby on Saturday night.

Capitals stars Lauren Jackson and Abby Bishop led the defending champions in the local derby; Jackson top-scored with 28 points to go with 10 rebounds and four blocks, Bishop added a double-double of her own with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Three more Caps players scored in double figures, Carly Wilson with 17 points, Marianna Tolo 15 and Natalie Hurst added 11.

Gretel Tippett was the only Institute player to reach double figures, scoring 11 points.

While the young AIS side continues to gel, they were overwhelmed by the far more experienced Capitals team which put further breathing space between themselves and fifth-placed Adelaide Lightning on the league ladder.

The Capitals set up the win with a 33-11 opening quarter and were never headed.

Shooting 45-of-85 from the field at 53 percent, Canberra surged away in every term, keeping the AIS to just eight points in both the third and fourth quarter.

The Institute did a good job on the boards, pulling 39 to the Caps 54, and managed to penetrate the Capitals defence but their shooting percentage let them down, converting just 19 percent from the field (13-of-69).

Next week the Caps make a road trip to Dandenong while the AIS continues to search for the first win as it hosts Townsville.
