The Dandenong Jayco Rangers got their season off to a flying start, by taking a convincing 14 point round one victory over the Adelaide Link Lightning, 94-80, at Wayville Sports Centre in Adelaide on Friday night.

Rangers point guard Kathleen McLeod was impressive, dropping 21 points to go with 8 assists, while Tracy Gahan (19 points, 10 rebounds) and new import Ashley Robinson (14 points, 13 rebounds) both finished the game with double-doubles.

Adelaide had four double-digit scorers with Nicole Seekamp and Emma Langford both finishing the game with 19 points apiece, while Tegan Cunningham  was close behind with 18. But outside of the four there were few other major contributors, and they were unable to find the offensive fire-power to get on top of a strong Rangers line-up.

Dandenong worked their way to a five point quarter time lead, after a strong first period, and the scoring punch increased by both teams in the second period. Although Adelaide lifted their work rate, they were unable to make any inroads into the quarter-time lead, still trailing by five at the half.

Dandenong lifted in the third period again and went into the final term up by 11. This turned out to be an insurmountable lead with the Rangers finishing the game 14 point victors.

Dandenong was stronger on the boards, the likes of Robinson and Gahan leading the team to a 45-34 edge, 16 of their 45 on the offensive glass. And Dandenong are already proving that second-chance points will need to be kept to a minimum if opposing sides are going to keep this Rangers team within striking distance.

For Dandenong, the job isnít quite done yet. They travel further west to face the West Coast Waves tomorrow; while for Adelaide, they must regroup and look to bounce back in round two next week.
