The Canberra Capitals have bounced back sharply from last night’s disappointing loss to the Logan Thunder, with a strong 14-point win over the Townsville Fire, 81-67.
The Capitals had four players in double-figures with Marianna Tolo enjoying a monster outing, finishing with 27 points and 12 boards. Michele Cosier was also wreaking havoc – she ended the game with 21.
For the Fire, Rachael Flanagan continued her fine form, finishing with 19 points, while Amy Lewis had 14.
Canberra’s loss to the Thunder was their first for the season on Friday night, and their backs were up against the wall early against Townsville also, the Fire jumping out to a big nine point lead at quarter time thanks to a huge 33 point term.
But things changed dramatically in the second. Townsville turned it over as many times as they scored points in the term, finishing with 10 of each. The Capitals got things back to level at 43 a piece heading into the change rooms.
From then on it was all Canberra, Townsville unable to get things going offensively again in the second half succumbing to another disappointing defeat, as they remain winless after three rounds.
Canberra, who have played more games than any other team in the league, sit in second after another tough road double. They look ahead at yet another double-header weekend next week before things settle for the reigning champions.
Canberra Capitals 81 (Marianna Tolo 27 points, 12 rebounds; Michelle Cosier 21, Nicole Romeo 12) defeated Townsville Fire 67 (Rachael Flanagan 19, Amy Lewis 14)
