The Canberra Capitals have defeated the AIS by 23 points on Wednesday night at the AIS Training Hall, in Canberra 76-53.
Michelle Cosier put up phenomenal numbers for the Capitals, top-scoring for the game with 20 points to go with 13 rebounds. Jessica Bibby added 14 points, while Carly Wilson finished with 13 points and Marianna Tolo had 12.
The AIS had a good spread of scorers also: Gretel Tippett finished with 13 points and 10 boards, while Madeleine Garrick and Rebecca Cole both finished with 11 points and Nadeen Payne added 10.
The AIS came out in the first term on a mission, winning the quarter 15-13 as the question was asked: could there be an upset brewing? That question was answered immediately, as the Capitals held the Institute to just seven points in the second quarter, putting together 22 of their own and taking a 13-point lead into the change-rooms.
Despite a much improved effort by the AIS in the third term, collecting 18 points for the quarter, the Capitals were able to extend their lead even further, taking an 18-point buffer into the last.
The fourth term was again won by the Capitals but the AIS showed plenty of spirit right up until the final buzzer, falling to the league-leaders by 23 in the end.
Canberra now moves to 10-1 on the 2010/11 season, as the chase is on – can anyone catch the Capitals?
