Aussie women keep on winning at Comm Games

The Australian Gangurrus had two more big wins with a combined score of 42-12 on their second day action at the Commonwealth Games with UC Capitals WNBL signing Amy Atwell starring with 22 of those points in Glasgow.

The women's Gangurrus opened up the 3x3 tournament at the Commonwealth Games back on Friday beating Kenya 21-5, Jamaica 21-13 and Fiji 21-3.

They had two more match ups to close the preliminary stage on Sunday and went on to defeat Cayman Islands 21-3 een with Emma Clarke not playing and then downed Uganda 21-9.

That has the Gangurrus through to the semi finals which will take place Wednesday in Scotland.

The first game for the Australian women's team on Sunday night saw them take on Cayman Islands and the Gangurrus were down to just the three players for the match up with Emma Clarke unable to play.

Australia made the flying start with the first seven points including a pair of two-pointers to Amy Atwell before she hit another to make it an 11-3 advantage.

When she hit her fourth shot from the outside the Gangurrus were on top of Cayman Islands 18-3 before a fifth made it 20-3 and then Lara McSpadden secured the 21-3 victory.

Atwell ended up shooting 5/9 from the outside for 11 points with six rebounds and three assists with McSpadden adding seven points and six rebounds, and Marena Whittle three points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Next up for the women's Gangurrus was a clash with Uganda and it was another flying start with the first five points including Clarke returning by scoring and Atwell continuing her hot shooting with another two-pointer.

It was a bunch of one-point scores for Australia from there before Whittle landed from outside to make the score 15-6 and then Atwell hit from deep as well before it was her who wrapped up the 21-9 victory with two free throws.

Atwell delivered another 11 points with four rebounds and two assists for the Gangurrus in the win over Uganda with Whittle contributing four points and eight rebounds, Clarke three points and five rebounds, and McSpadden three points, four rebounds and three assists.

The other Australian teams were also in action again on Sunday night including the men beating Guyana 21-11 with eight points from Jonah Antonio and seven from Jesse Wagstaff to go with six rebounds.

They then defeated Cayman Islands 21-5 with 12 points from Sam McDaniel with 4/4 two-point shooting.

The women's wheelchair team won their first game of Glasgow 2026 after losing first up to England and beat South Africa 20-5. That included 10 points, 12 rebounds and five assists from Georgia Munro-Cook.

The men's wheelchair team also scored their first win of the Commonwealth Games bouncing back from the loss to England by beating Kenya 21-5 with Tomas Klein scoring eight points and Eithen Leard six while Tom O'Neill-Thorne had four points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
