The Geelong Venom have signed three-time Coach of the Year Cheryl Chambers to lead a new-look program for the next two seasons.
With two decades of coaching experience, the three-time Championship coach and former player is set to revitalise the club heading into their third WNBL season.
Most recently leading the WNBL24 Championship-winning Southside Melbourne Flyers side, Chambers has over 300 games of coaching experience in the WNBL. Ready for a new challenge, in a new city, Chambers explained what drew her to Geelong.
“It's just a wonderful sporting town, that really attracts me. They’re only two years into the league and I think it’s a place where I can make a real difference,” she said.
“I've been able to use the time to add to my craft. It’s been a really good period of time to reignite, learn and develop a lot.”
Travelling to London and New York to learn from some of the world’s best coaches, while honing her skills in NBL1 with the South’s Sandringham Sabres – Chambers is embracing the challenge of taking on some of the world’s best coaches in WNBL27.
With the likes of Coach of the Year Kennedy Kerama and Championship-winning Coach Shannon Seebohm, the WNBL is in a golden era of coaching. Joining the pack with free agency looming, Chambers explained her plans to ensure Geelong recruit the best talent for WNBL27.
“There's lots of competition and players will go to the place that suits them, it's great that we've got some really good experienced coaches in the league,” she said.
“We’ll certainly be looking to have a style of play that's exciting to watch, get some athletic players, lots of shooters and people that can get up the floor – so that defensively we can be disruptive as well. Without names, they're the style of players that we'll be looking to.”
With only Alex Sharp under contract, can the legendary coach bring Geelong to their first Finals series this coming season?
