Talking points

Target on champ's back

Townsville have learned quickly that the reigning champions tag comes with some weight, and a 2-2 start shows how hard defending a title can be, as they aim to avoid a third loss in their first five outings.

The Fire still have one of the League’s most imposing lineups, but they’ve yet to find the consistency that carried them to last season’s championship.

With an in-form Perth side led by Anneli Maley and Georgia Amoore coming to town on Tuesday night, a win against their WNBL26 Championship Series foes would go a long way to proving they are still the team to beat.

Unstoppable Maley

Anneli Maley has picked up right where she left off, and Perth will be counting on more of the same when they visit Townsville on Tuesday night.

Fresh from a New York summer that has only sharpened her game, Maley posted a huge double-double for Ryan Petrik’s side in their win over Adelaide.

With Georgia Amoore slotting in seamlessly alongside her, the Lynx have quickly become one of the league’s most dangerous teams.

The Fire’s frontcourt of Alex Fowler and Alicia Froling will test her on the glass, but if Maley keeps up her relentless form, Perth will fancy their chances of leaving Townsville with the win.
