The Southside Melbourne FLyers have landed one of the biggest international signings in club history, with Chinese National Team star Wang “Rainy” Siyu bringing elite credentials, leadership and uncompromising winning mentality to the WNBL.
Widely regarded as one of China’s premier guards and affectionately known by Australian fans as the “Clutch Queen” for her ability to deliver in big moments, Rainy arrives in Melbourne with one clear objective - to compete for Championships.
That competitive drive is reflected in the number she’ll be wearing at the Flyers.
“As a player, I always want to win a Championship. I think the most important thing is I want to win, so always be number one,” Rainy said.
The number one symbolises the mindset that has made the 29-year-old a fixture of the Chinese National Team and one of the most respected guards in international basketball.
While her reputation has been built on delivering under pressure, Rainy remains humble when discussing the moment that earned her the name “Clutch Queen”.
“It’s a great honour for me,” she said.
“I think I just focus on the moment and do it and trust yourself, trust the team and the result is going to be great.”
Her arrival is a major coup for the Flyers, who continue to assemble a roster capable of challenging the League’s best.
Beyond her on-court impact, Rainy is equally focused on helping inspire the next generation of players.
“Kobe (Bryant) once said the most important thing is to inspire the next generation and also I want to use my experience to do that,” she said.
“I want to create opportunities for the young players and teammates, let them know what to prepare and how to prepare.”
Rainy’s decision to join the WNBL was influenced in part by fellow Chinese National Team teammate Han Xu, who starred for the Perth Lynx in WNBL26 and provided a firsthand example of the League’s quality.
“I saw her (Han Xu) have a good performance in the WNBL and she played really, really good,” she said.
“Because the WNBL is a high-level league and also has strong physicality, I wanted to try my best.”
The combination of world-class talent, leadership and relentless desire to win is expected to make Rainy one of the most exciting players in the competition this season.
For Flyers fans, they can expect a player who embraces responsibility, thrives in big moments and is determined to elevate those around her.
Most importantly, they can expect a competitor.
