The Opals pairing set to terrorise the WNBL

Bendigo Spirit Head Coach Kennedy Kereama has thrown his support behind his new backcourt pairing, with reigning MVP Isobel Borlase set to line up alongside superstar recruit Jade Melbourne as the Opals duo prepares to reunite on a WNBL court this season.

Having brought Melbourne to the club in one of the biggest off-season moves of the year, Kereama spoke about what she can do alongside Borlase.

"It's certainly an exciting prospect," Kereama said.

"All of that screams an incredible amount of potential, as far as, the sky could possibly be the limit for this group.

"It's [then] us having to figure that out and gel that together, and I think going back to the continuity and chemistry is going to be a really important piece for us."

Kereama also touched on the significance of bringing the Traralgon-born star back to Regional Victoria.

"[Jade] obviously coming back to Regional Victoria is huge," Kereama said.

"We are one of two Regional Victorian basketball clubs. That's something we certainly hang our hat on as far as getting out to the community.

"Jade for us was a really important piece … she encompasses everything that is basketball [in] country Victoria.

"[She's] incredibly talented. She's put 40 on us previously… so it's going to be nice for us to be on the other end of that but also just seeing now how she runs a team and how she sets her teammates up for success."

With Melbourne now joining one of the best players in the country in Borlase, this backcourt looks set to be among the hardest to beat this season.

Kereama first came up against Borlase when she played Under-16s for South Australia, back when he was coaching Vic Metro, and even then, he could see the makings of a special talent.

"We played them in the final, and the first thing I did after the final was call [then Adelaide Lightning coach] Chris Lucas and say 'my goodness mate, there's this kid playing Under-16's and she could physically be ready right now to play in the WNBL'," Kereama said.

"Back then you could tell that she was going to be really special.

"What's really been impressive is just how Izzy's really locked into [needing] to work on these two to three things and that's what we're going to focus on for the season.

"She's really been the catalyst for everything that's probably happening in her basketball world right now, but it's nice to be able to help facilitate an environment that's going to create that for her."

Borlase and Melbourne will reunite in Bendigo once Atlanta and Seattle's WNBA seasons wrap up.

The Spirit will open their WNBL27 season on Saturday, October 17th against the UC Capitals.
