The last time she featured in a WNBL season, she finished second in MVP voting and as the Defensive Player of the Year.

Now Sydney Flames star Lauren Nicholson is just days away from making her incredible return to the court, following the birth of her first child Ari, which has given her a whole different perspective.

“I feel like I have a whole different perspective now,” Nicholson said to basketball.com.au.

“Being a mum definitely comes first, but it makes you also appreciate basketball a little bit more."

Nicholson is just one of numerous mothers that will suit up this 2025-26 season, including her Flames teammate Mikaela Cann.

“I think it’s really special [to have so many mothers in the league] and I've seen a few mums do it before me, and I think that's what kind of inspired me,” she said.

“I thought to myself, ‘I can get back and do this’. I play with Mikhaela [Cann] who has three children and she's arguably the fittest on our team or in the league, so it’s incredible. It just shows what you are capable of as a female athlete.”

Nicholson and her Flames travel to Geelong for their Round 1 clash with Venom, tipping off at 7pm, live on ESPN2.
