Fresh off lifting the WNBA championship trophy with the Golden State Valkyries, Miela Sowah is preparing to bring plenty of newfound experience back to Townsville.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday following the Finals victory, Sowah reflected on the Valkyries’ road to success and the feeling of claiming their maiden championship.
“Just watching the journey we’ve had from the season, all the way from training camp to where we are now, the games looked pretty rough, but we were able to find a way,” Sowah said.
“I think all those adversities and trials and everything we’ve gone through, I think that’s what makes this even more sweet; you’ve done it together.
“We talk about it heaps; we love each other as a team.
“Being able to fight for this, it couldn’t have gone any better.”
Sowah has also had a chance to reflect on her own path to this moment.
“I probably couldn’t have imagined I’d be sitting right here with the WNBA championship trophy right next to me,” she added.
“I just think back to when I was like 14, and I decided I wanted to pursue this. To live it out is just crazy and [I’m] super grateful.”

Townsville Fire Head Coach Shannon Seebohm touched on the work Sowah has put in at the club to go on and achieve such an impressive feat in the WNBA.
“Miela’s [goals were] definitely to be part of the Opals, win a championship and then hopefully make the WNBA,” Seebohm said.
“I think it’s amazing to see that she’s been able to tick those boxes and then, obviously, to be part of a program like the Valkyries that, to be honest, is kind of like a Townsville Fire-type program.”
Looking ahead to Sowah’s return, Seebohm is eager to see what she can bring to the Townsville roster after a stint with the Valkyries.
“I’m sure she’s learned a lot. I know, talking to her, she’s put a lot of work into her game and her skills,” he added.
“I’m excited to see some of that and what that looks like when she comes back into our program.
“I know the girls are really excited to have her back as well.”
Sowah is likely to return on Sunday, November 15, when Townsville take on the UC Capitals at AIS Arena in Canberra.
