"Our depth is our power": Opals chase perfect record against Belgium

The Australian Opals are undefeated and feeling extremely confident heading into their third game at the FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin.

Off the back of another 16-point win against Türkiye on Sunday night, Australian time, the Opals have now qualified for the next phase of the tournament. Now, it's about claiming top spot and sewing up a path straight to the Quarter Finals.

In their way stands a team ranked fifth in the world, Belgium.

"Having a game under our belt, we were just ready to play Türkiye today," captain Ezi Magbegor said after the win.

"We knew they were a great team and obviously played them earlier in the year.

"I'm just proud of the team for being able to play through all four quarters. Everyone stepped up. Izzy (Bourne) stepping into the starting lineup – I was proud of her.

"It was just a great team win overall."

Magbegor was the Opals' top scorer with 21 on the night, while Steph Talbot had 17 to go with 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

In the absence of Alanna Smith (missed last game) and Sami Whitcomb (out of tournament), Australia is leaning on its entire squad to get the job done.

"I thought we got better from our first game, and that usually happens for us in a tournament," coach Sandy Brondello said.

"I thought Ezi had a good game. We had a lot of great contributions from so many different players today, but we know we have to be better and continue to get better as we move forward.

"We say our depth is our power. We did have a few players in foul trouble, so I was really mindful of not getting anyone a third one before half-time.

"Obviously, [Alex] Fowler and [Steph] Talbot did get one. Can't help it.

"It's a big lineup. It's a lineup that allows us to be a little more creative on the defensive end. I thought Ally Wilson had a fantastic game for us, as did Ezi."

The Opals take on Belgium on Monday night at 7:30pm AEST, live on ESPN via Disney+ and Kayo Sports.
