Saturday's Round 1 clash was a historical occasion in more ways than one for WNBL legend Cayla George.

Not only did it mark the biggest crowd to witness a season opener, but it also represented the Australian Opal's first game as a Southside Melbourne Flyer.

Then during the fixture against the UC Capitals, George overtook Shelley Gorman and moved into third all-time on the competition's scorers list with 5,205 points to her name.

"Records and individual accolades like this are never something that I play for, but it's really cool I can be a part of the history of this amazing league," George said.

"It's great to have my name in the history books, alongside some absolute legends of our game, in a competition that's done so much for my career."

Looking forward, the Flyers are now in Sydney preparing for their Round 2 fixture with George's former team, the Flames.

"Sydney is and will always be close to my heart, as we had two great years there," the WNBL23 MVP said.

"I've got nothing but love for the Flames club and fans, as I really enjoyed my time in Sydney.

But I'm a Flyer now and we're focusing on what we can do to secure our first win of the season. I know it's going to be a great game between two strong teams that are hungry to win."

Friday's match will also tip off the WNBL's annual Indigenous Round, which holds a special place in George's heart due to her family connection.

"For me, on a personal level, Indigenous Round means representing all Indigenous people and in particular, showing Pearl that you can be anything you like if you put your mind to it," the three-time Olympian said.

"You can represent your country, you can be in a WNBL program, you can be seen and you can be visible as an Indigenous girl.

"It's really important that we respect the culture and do rounds like this, because they're a huge part of Australian history.

"I love that I can show Pearl that this is us representing you, on the court and on the TV, showcasing artwork that demonstrates their culture and their connection to the land and sea."

Friday's game at Quaycentre tips off at 7pm AEDT, live on ESPN2 and 9Now.
