Southside Melbourne Flyers have bolstered their frontcourt ahead of WNBL27, signing exciting American centre Sakima Walker for the upcoming season.
The 196cm centre arrives in Melbourne with championship pedigree and professional experience, adding size, athleticism and physicality to the Flyers’ roster.
Walker began her collegiate career at South Carolina, where she was part of the Gamecocks’ 2024 NCAA Championship-winning team, before transferring to California for her final season.
During her time at Cal, Walker averaged 11.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, while shooting 55.9 per cent from the field.
The 22-year-old also gained valuable professional experience with the Minnesota Lynx during the 2026 WNBA pre-season, and will now make her WNBL debut with the Flyers.
Flyers Head Coach Sam Mackinnon said Walker’s competitiveness and energy will make her an exciting addition.
“Sakima is a player who we believe Flyers fans are going to be incredibly excited to watch. She brings size, athleticism and a real physical presence, but what really stood out to us was her competitiveness and her desire to keep getting better.”
For Walker, Melbourne will provide the opportunity to begin her professional career while experiencing the passion of the Flyers faithful.
“I can’t wait to get out there, compete with my teammates and experience what it’s like to play in front of the Flyers fans. I know Melbourne has an incredible basketball community, and I’m excited to be a part of it.
“Hopefully we can give everyone plenty to cheer about this season.”
With NCAA Championship experience, WNBA exposure and plenty of potential, Walker is set to bring energy and athleticism to the Flyers as they prepare for WNBL27.
