From Britain to breakout: The catalyst behind Ashby's rise

The Perth Lynx's newest signing, Samantha Ashby, credits her experience on the world stage for her meteoric hoops rise.

Ashby, who was born in the United Kingdom to Australian parents before moving to Perth via Singapore at age 10, represented Great Britain at EuroBasket 2025.

The now dual-citizen says thie experience in Germany powered her improvement on the court, highlighted by her 21 points per game for the Perth Redbacks during the 2026 NBL1 West season.

"My improvement has been exponential. I think that is partly due to GB," Ashby said to the West Australian.

"Learning how physical European basketball was changed me a lot. I hadn't been exposed to that before. So playing against Spain and Germany was eye-opening and really beneficial.

"I got opportunities I didn't find when growing up in Australia. It was a big deal when I got invited to GB and had the chance to play at the international level. That standard was really good for my development."

The 25-year-old joins Ryan Petrik's side, which also features Alex Ciabattoni, Steph Gorman, Nya Lok, Anneli Maley, Teige Morrell, Haley Peters and Sami Whitcomb for WNBL27.
