The revamp of the Sydney Flames’ roster has continued with the club announcing the exciting addition of Maya Dodson on Thursday, pending League review and approval.
Dodson’s recruitment to the Harbour City follows in the footsteps of fellow additions Ally Wilson, Jasmin Shelley, Isabelle Bourne and Charlise Dunn.
Dodson is excited to make the move to the WNBL as she enters the next stage of her professional career.
“After playing in New Zealand during my first professional season, playing in the WNBL was always at the back of my mind,” Dodson said.
“Going into my fifth season, it felt like the right time to make that move.
“When I spoke with Renae [Garlepp], I really connected with her vision and what she's building in Sydney.
“I'm excited for the opportunity to be part of it.”
Before the WNBL, the 6’3 Dodson played college hoops for Stanford and Notre Dame, which led to her being selected with the 26th pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury.
The next season, Dodson spent the 2023 pre-season with the Minnesota Lynx on a training camp contract.
Since then, the 27-year-old has enjoyed successful stints in Poland, New Zealand and Spain.
With this basketball resume, Flames Head Coach Garlepp is thrilled to add Dodson to her revamped roster.
“We’re just thrilled,” Garlepp said.
“She brings size, athleticism, mobility and a strong defensive presence, and we feel she’s a perfect fit for both the style and environment we’re building.
“We’re excited to see the impact she’ll have with us.”
Rounding out Sydney’s roster for next season are Lauren Nicholson, Agnes Emma-Nnopu, Isabelle Morgan and Shaneice Swain.
