After two wins on the road, the in-form Townsville Fire are heading into their Round 3 clash against the Southside Melbourne Flyers as humble as ever.
In their Round 1 Grand Final rematch, Townsville came out on top against the Bendigo Spirit 74-66 and blowing out the UC Capitals 105-70 in Canberra in Round 2, the Fire have proven themselves against two of the best teams in the competition on the road.
Coach Shannon Seebohm explained that their depth has been a major factor in their success thus far, going 11 deep on the roster. The five-time Coach of the Year is spoiled for choices and can spread the workload across his star-studded roster.
A key example was Chantel Horvat, who in Saturday's win exploded for 20 points and nine rebounds in 23 minutes. She was signed as an injury replacement player for Safforn Shiels, showing that every single player on the roster is capable of swinging games for the Fire.
With another three games ahead before they make their eventual home debut, co-captain Courtney Woods spoke about how important their consistency will be against Friday’s opponent, the Southside Melbourne Flyers.
“We got excited about being the favourites for about 10 seconds, then Shannon immediately humbled us,” she said.
“Winning the pre-season was cool, and winning our first games is cool, but it’s obviously a long season. There was a massive difference from the Bendigo game and from today (Saturday), I think it’s really about choosing how we are going to play and continue to build on that – so by the end of the season, we are playing really high-quality basketball.”
In Rounds 3 and 4, the Fire will again play on road against Southside Melbourne, Perth and Geelong, before their first home game in Round 5 against the Adelaide Lightning.
Watch the Townsville Fire take on the Southside Melbourne Flyers on Friday night in a spooky Halloween clash from 7:00pm AEDT live on ESPN2.
