Capitals sharpshooter targets WNBA return

Seeking a fresh start in Canberra with the Capitals after four seasons in Perth, sharpshooter Amy Atwell is looking to bring her game to the next level in WNBL27.

Taking some momentum out of a strong WNBL26 Season with the Lynx, and an excellent 2026 Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning campaign with the Gangurrus, Atwell is now setting her sights on a return to the WNBA and the Australian Opals squad.

“I definitely want to get back to the WNBA and give that another crack,” Atwell said on The Loop, presented by Blackmores.

“Obviously [I] want to get back into the Opals' final 12 as well.

“I think for me, having those long-term goals is awesome and definitely something I want to get back to.”

Enduring a few difficult injury setbacks over recent seasons, Atwell is fit and firing for WNBL27, after a strong run of health.

“The last few years for me have been pretty injury-interrupted with my knee and getting back to full health,” Atwell added.

“The last six months for me have been really solid, and I’m feeling the best I have in a long time in my body.

“For me it’s just getting back to 100 per cent healthy and playing my best basketball and feeling good and having fun out on the court again.”

Atwell posted 26 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in the UC Capitals’ maiden win of the WNBL27 Season, marking an excellent start to her campaign.

The UC Capitals’ 2026-27 campaign continues on Friday night, when they travel to Sydney to take on the Flames.
