Popular guard Lilly Rotunno has committed to the club and will return for WNBL‘27, subject to League review and approval.
Rotunno’s extension represents a significant win for the club, with the guard having established herself as one of the competition’s most consistent performers. Currently in outstanding form in the NBL1 for Geelong United, Rotunno is averaging 18.50 points, 3.67 rebounds and 2.83 assists per game - numbers that underline why the Venom were eager to secure her services ahead of the new season.
Incoming head coach Cheryl Chambers, said that Lilly was a standout contributor in her first season with the Venom.
“We are genuinely thrilled Lilly is coming back. What she brings goes well beyond the stat sheet - she’s a fierce competitor, a loyal teammate, and someone who makes everyone around her better,” said Chambers.
“She has continued to grow and improve, and I have no doubt she will be an important part of what we’re building here in Geelong. We can’t wait to get to work.”
The praise extends beyond the Venom program with Geelong United head coach Megan Moody - who has worked closely with Rotunno during her time in the NBL1 - equally enthusiastic about what the guard brings to any environment she steps into.
“Lilly is the ultimate professional and the ultimate teammate. She sets the standard in every training session, every game day, and everything in between," said Moody.
“What impresses me most is that she never stops working on her game - she has grown enormously as a player and continues to do so. Geelong is keeping a very special player, but more importantly, a very special person.”
For Rotunno, the decision to remain at Geelong was straightforward, driven as much by the connection she has forged with the Geelong community as by anything that happens on the court.
“From the moment I arrived in Geelong, I felt at home - the community here is something genuinely special and that’s not something I take for granted in this game,” said Rotunno.
“The support of the fans, the warmth of the people in this city - it means a lot to me and I am excited to recommit under Cheryl and her vision for this team.”
