Ahead of the Tasmania Jewels’ WNBL debut during Thursday’s season-opener against Geelong, JackJumpers Head Coach Scott Roth has spoken on the impact the new side will have on the sporting landscape in their state.
“It’s a huge moment for the state,” Roth said in the JackJumpers’ post-game press conference on Friday.
“For five years, I’ve travelled throughout Tasmania, and one of the number-one questions I get no matter where I am… ‘when’s the girls’ team coming?’
“The women now have something to aspire to, whether it’s coaching [or] playing; those things are going to be wonderful for the young girls in Tasmania, and another pathway for them."
Roth also touched on the massive leap that Tasmania has taken in sport and what they will bring to the state's reputation.
“The island is cooking, and we’re excited about us raising the bar for all the sports teams in Tasmania," Roth added.
“It’s no longer a punching bag; we all Defend the Island for the right reasons down there.
“It is the grit and grind of what we do, and the Jewels will just fit in seamlessly with us.
“It’s going to be very inspirational for the young ladies to have something to look forward to.”
The Tasmania Jewels will take on Geelong in the WNBL27 season-opener on Thursday, October 15 from 7pm AEDT, live on 9Now and ESPN via Disney+.
