WNBL Announces New Leadership Appointments

The WNBL is thrilled to announce the leadership appointments of experienced sporting administrator, Justin Nelson, appointed Chief WNBL Operations Officer with basketball legend, Lauren Jackson as Chief Strategy and Basketball Partnerships Officer. These appointments mark an exciting move to strengthen the league’s leadership as it sharpens its focus on operational excellence, delivery and growth ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The announcement comes after a strong first season under the new ownership group, marked by a focus on building opportunities for the league’s players, clubs, fans and partners, and elevating the overall competition experience. These new positions support the realisations of the WNBL’s long-term vision – creating the best women’s basketball league in the world.
As part of the NBL Group, Justin Nelson will oversee the running of the league and focus on operational delivery for fans, players, commercial partners and clubs. Justin has more than 30 years’ experience in sport and media across Australia and New Zealand with his most recent role being Chief Clubs Officer.
Justin was responsible for building New Zealand’s first-ever professional basketball league with pay parity and a landmark national broadcast deal. He has also coached more than 350 women’s basketball games with deep knowledge of the sporting and media landscape from a club, league, and international level.

We’ve expanded with a ninth team with us this season, we’re supported by some world-class local and global partners, and we have some of the best fans in the country – now we’re focused on the WNBL meaning more to more people.”

As Chief Strategy and Basketball Partnerships Officer, Lauren Jackson will bring focus to the WNBL’s strategy for league growth, including the evolution of our on-court product, talent pathways and international opportunities.
The five-time Olympian and sporting legend, Lauren is no stranger to the WNBL. She champions Australian talent and plays a significant role in supporting the next generation of elite basketballers from across Australia. Her expanded role with the WNBL is set to supercharge the league’s cut through on a national stage and our partners across the world.
